The Bluebelles were set up in 2014 by the club as an opportunity to give the ladies of Chertsey Cricket Club a platform to learn and play cricket along with improving their fitness. Made up of mums, daughters and partners, the squad soon grew along with their ambition.
After a year’s hiatus, and under the new nickname of The Bluebelles, in 2016 the ladies reformed with gusto under the devoted coaching of Nigel Chapman, assisted fantastically by Chris Smith and Stuart Bailey.
The squad gained enthusiastic new members, and slowly learnt their craft during training sessions on Wednesday nights. They went on to play three matches that season, all in front of an expectant Chertsey crowd, and gained valuable experience along the way.
They even had an inclusion at the end of season Presentation Night, with awards going to Wendy Bolger for Best Batsman, Katie Weston as Best Bowler, and Amber Khaleel the Most Improved Player.
Ahead of the 2018 season The Bluebelles are gaining momentum. Still growing in number, still developing, and still gaining interest.
A handful of matches – including the ECB-backed SMASH IT tournament being played home & away throughout the season – have been arranged and the future is looking very bright.
The team will continue to be led by Wendy Bolger, who captains like she strikes the ball, smashing.
If you would like to join The Bluebelles, you must firstly be a Chertsey Cricket Club member. Training sessions are held every Wednesday evening at the club (weather permitting), from 6pm – 7.45pm. The first session is 25th April and there is no pre-requisite on experience, age or ability.
