The 2011 Chertsey Genet Social League started
well with ten teams lined up to
start.
We welcomed two new sides this year, with the Chapmans making an
entrance (and looking very similar to the Greenjackets!) and the Ashford Nomads
who entered into the spirit of the
League.
After a promising start to the season we were hit by the
good old British summer. Following on from last summer where we had
no weather cancellations at all, this year we had five weeks affected
by rain. The season started well but Thursdays in July and August
seemed to signal the storm clouds over
Chertsey!
Most people tried to rearrange the fixtures, but even some
of these rearranged matches were rained off. So as you will see
below, only the Salesians and Marist managed to play all nine games.
The clear winners were the Vet Labs who have risen from the
wooden spoon to champions in just a couple of years, playing cricket
must be a condition of employment there
now!
The battle for second was much closer and had we been able
to play all the matches it could have been much more exciting. The Thursday
BBQ was a star attraction, but even that became a casualty of
the awful weather. On the plus side, it was good to see
one or two players joining the weekend teams and hopefully this trend
will continue as we try and get the Social League players to
take a more active part in the
Club.
Despite
all that, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the season again and it
remains a popular way to spend a couple of hours on Thursday
evenings while waiting for the bar to
open!
Look forward to seeing you all in
2012.
